As brake problems with your vehicle develop, they become more and more of a safety hazard. Driving with brake issues is dangerous so have your brakes checked regularly, whether you think there’s a problem or not. As you drive, there are a few warning signs that a trip to the mechanic to check your brakes is needed. Here’s what to watch and listen for.
Brake noise
Typically, you should be able to apply the brakes silently. If you start hearing noises such as scraping, grinding, squealing or other noises that seem out of the ordinary, it’s a sign that you may need to change the brake pads or shoes. When brake fluid gets into linings, loose brake components, or a lack of proper lubrication can also be the cause of odd noises from your brakes. If your brakes start making noises they shouldn’t be, have them checked by a professional immediately.
Brake drag
After coming to a stop, if you find that there’s a delay between letting up on the brake pedal and your car beginning to roll forward, that’s known as brake drag. There are a number of possible culprits. A cylinder piston could be stuck, a master cylinder could be defective, or it may even be an issue with the parking brake. In any case, it’s important to have your vehicle checked when you experience brake drag.
Vibrations
Over time, a brake disc or drum can become warped with use. In rare cases, warping could even be the result of a factory defect. In either case, you’ll typically begin to feel vibrations from your brake pedal or steering wheel as you brake. This is one of the most obvious and clear signs that your vehicle has brake problems that need to be inspected.
Pressure
Depending on the particular problem, you could experience a brake pedal that requires excessive force to use, or a pedal that exhibits no pressure whatsoever. In some cases, this may only be a temporary problem. For example, when water gets on brake lines, it can cause braking to be more difficult until it dries. If excessive pressure is required to break over a longer period of time, it suggests a number of potential issues including with brake fluid, or defects in part of the braking system. When there’s no brake pedal pressure, it can point to problems with caliper pistons, wheel cylinders, contaminated pads or shoes or many others.
